An observational short film shot during a rare snowfall in Wellington.

SNOW ON CUBA MALL

On August 18th 2011 it began to Snow in Wellington, New Zealand for the first time in decades. I had always wanted to capture a human reaction to a rare event so I kept my eye on the weather radar that morning. When I saw the snow shower approaching I rushed my camera into position on a popular pedestrian street called Cuba Mall and waited for the first flakes to fall. I used a 70mm-200mm zoom lens so as not to distract the passers by and quickly framed each person as the event unfolded. Most had never witnessed snowfall before so it was the perfect opportunity to capture a child-like reaction.

The film quickly gained views online and was picked up by various news websites around the world. It even featured on the main evening TV news in Ireland! Click here to watch
